Newsweek is the global media organization that has earned audience time and trust for more than 90 years. Newsweek reaches 100 million people each month with thought-provoking news, opinion, images, graphics, and video delivered across a dozen print and digital platforms. Headquartered in New York City, Newsweek also publishes international editions in EMEA and Asia.

Newsweek is seeking a VP of Programmatic Yield & Optimization to lead the technical and analytical evolution of our programmatic revenue strategy. This role requires deep fluency in auction dynamics, real-time bidding, and programmatic monetization, as well as the ability to leverage advanced analytics, data modeling, and experimentation frameworks to maximize yield.

You’ll work cross-functionally with data engineers, analysts, and product/engineering teams to build a yield strategy rooted in data science — applying algorithms, A/B testing, and predictive analytics to optimize pricing, inventory allocation, and demand paths.

This role is ideal for a technical leader with a background in ad tech, analytics, and/or engineering who is excited to take a hands-on, quantitative approach to unlocking revenue opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

🔬 Programmatic Yield Optimization & Strategy

  • Own and evolve yield optimization frameworks to increase revenue per impression and session across open market, PMP, and direct-sold channels.
  • Model and optimize auction dynamics: set floor prices, analyze bid density, and maximize win rates across multiple SSPs.
  • Design and run multivariate experiments (e.g., floor price testing, bidder throttling) to continuously refine auction strategy.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering to implement and iterate on header bidding, server-side integrations, and supply-path optimization logic.

📊 Advanced Analytics & Revenue Intelligence

  • Lead in-depth analysis of bid requests, bid responses, fill rates, latency, and CPM variance to identify performance opportunities.
  • Develop predictive models and diagnostic tools to inform decisions around pricing, partner prioritization, and deal packaging.
  • Drive first- and third-party data activation strategies to improve segmentation, targeting, and yield.
  • Build and maintain dashboards and automated reporting pipelines to track monetization KPIs and surface optimization insights.

⚙️ Ad Tech Infrastructure & Partner Collaboration

  • Partner with data engineering and analytics teams to define the programmatic data layer and optimize data pipeline architecture.
  • Serve as an internal expert on ad tech systems (GAM, Prebid, OpenRTB, etc.) and external demand platforms (SSPs, DSPs).
  • Stay ahead of key trends including privacy regulation (GDPR, CCPA), AI/ML in programmatic, and signal loss due to cookie deprecation.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in programmatic yield, ad tech, or revenue optimization, ideally in a data-driven environment.
  • Proficiency in SQL and experience with data tools (e.g., BigQuery, Snowflake, Looker, Tableau).
  • Comfortable analyzing and manipulating large-scale bidstream and auction data.
  • Strong understanding of RTB mechanics, header bidding frameworks (Prebid, Amazon TAM), and server-to-server integrations.
  • Familiarity with data science methodologies and working closely with data engineers or scientists.
  • Experience working with ad servers like Google Ad Manager, and SSPs such as Index Exchange, Magnite, Xandr.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional projects across data, engineering, and product teams.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with Python, R, or other statistical/ML tooling.
  • Experience with CTV, OTT, or digital audio.
  • Knowledge of privacy-forward approaches to identity and audience targeting.

Salary range: $150,000 - $200,000 commensurate with experience

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
