Honeybee Robotics develops and produces ground-breaking robotics that enable the exploration and utilization of space.
The Role

Honeybee Robotics, a Blue Origin Company, has been at the forefront of robotics for over 40 years, establishing ourselves as pioneers in developing novel exploration systems for the most extreme planetary environments. At our Southern California location, we look to "Touch Life" by supporting planetary science, including every NASA Mars rover since Spirit and Opportunity. We aim to "Mine the Sky" through the development of practical In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) solutions. We search for technically brilliant individuals in engineering, software, and support fields who take ownership of their work, enjoy collaborating in teams, and have a laser focus on the details that drive excellence.

Honeybee Robotics is looking for a skilled Test Engineer to push the limits of test environments to the blazing power of rocket launches and out to the cold vacuums of outer space. The Test Engineer assists with maintaining our test labs, including our lunar and planetary test chambers and our wide range of test equipment. There’s no second chance for space hardware, so we run a high volume of standard tests and then design customized, rigorous tests for our space robotics and equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, manufacture, and build test fixtures to support component environmental testing.
  • Develop, plan, and execute component and subsystem tests, including development, leak, shock, vibe, thermal, proof, and EMC.
  • Develop test requirements, plans, and procedures to ensure acceptable hardware/ system performance.
  • Design, define, procure, and install system test components and materials; manage vendors and subcontractors during installation.
  • Assist in evaluating hardware and system performance data from qualification and acceptance testing.
  • Assist in troubleshooting qualification and acceptance test anomalies, provide dispositions for hardware non-conformances with supporting rationale, perform system and component risk assessments, and define risk burndown in support of vehicle testing and ultimately flight.
  • Identify opportunities for safety improvements and cost savings.
  • Demonstrate high standards in test operations and work cooperatively with a diverse team of Integration Engineers, Responsible Engineers, and customers to ensure requirements are met.
  • Integrate between thermal subsystem and overall system level vehicle to ensure component level testing is in compliance with overall vehicle test plans.
  • Lead daily test operations, operate test consoles, direct technician work, and coordinate with internal customers.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. Degree in mechanical, electrical, or aerospace engineering, physics, or other related disciplines.
  • 2+ years working in aerospace, engineering, or precision mechanical assembly environments.
  • Standard test equipment experience, including digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, function generators, high voltage testers, motion controllers, and temperature controllers.
  • Experience working with thermal vacuum chambers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Inventor or PTC Creo.
  • Knowledge of Aerospace Workmanship Standards J-STD-001 Space Addendum, NASA STD 8739.12, and 8739.4.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have a full range of dexterity and mobility to move in and around test equipment; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Employee Benefits include medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, and short and long-term disability.
  • 401(k) with immediate vesting and a 4.5% company match (100% on the first 3% and 50% on the next 3%)
  • Education Reimbursement for certificate, undergraduate, and graduate programs
  • Paid Time Off includes up to 4 weeks per year, paid parental leave, two floating, and 11 company holidays.

See your work make an impact on some of the most exciting space missions. Work alongside with the best and the brightest, including our partners across the aerospace industry. In a few short years, your contributions will allow you to point to Mars, the Moon, or Saturn's moon Titan, and say, "I did that!"
