Job Description

The Opportunity:

This position is a technical oversight role responsible for helping support and drive the development and publication of Mattel’s video game products.  With a strong focus on mobile free-to-play game development and live operations enablement, this role directly supports our publishing operations throughout the entire product development lifecycle with third-party developers.  This role is key to supporting the timely delivery of high-quality mobile games; ensuring well-vetted developer choices upholding solid product development plans; and navigating complex technology issues throughout development and eventual global release.

What Your Impact Will Be:

  • Represent the voice of the publisher for all game-specific technical and engineering issues throughout development and live operations – owning technical aspects of projects at third-party studios from initial concept and product development through launch.
  • Be an integral member of the publishing core team; collaborating closely with game production, design, art, live operations and QA resources to ensure high-quality deliverables that meet both project and business objectives.
  • Collaborate on product development plans, ensuring viability of engineering and technology goals, identifying upfront risks and mitigation plans.
  • Provide technical oversight and strong partnerships with third-party developers, vetting technical designs, assessing capabilities, aligning technical plans.
  • Assess product quality and delivery-related risks; develop mitigation strategies and provide expert guidance to game developers throughout production; getting hands-on with deep analysis and firefighting where necessary.
  • Provide timely, accurate, and professionally prepared reporting, including status updates, issue tracking, and technical analysis.
  • Ensure titles are well integrated into Mattel games publishing platform services – building technical requirements and identifying feature dependencies, providing both third-party developers and Mattel game Live Operations are setup for success.

Qualifications

What We’re Looking For:

  • BA/BS degree Engineering / Games Development discipline preferred or equivalent work experience within game studios or publishers.
  • 5+ years of experience in the mobile games product development, working hands-on on successfully published mobile games, working directly within game development teams and supporting externally (third-party) development projects.
  • Experience working hands-on with mobile, not afraid to dig into engineering issues.  Console, and PC platforms also a plus.
  • Experience resolving engineering challenges, investigating bugs and performance issues, and working hands-on with game development teams.
  • Solid understanding of the free-to-play game ecosystem, games engineering and LiveOps technology trends, and video game design sensibilities.
  • Analytical thinking and solution-oriented mindset, brings industry best practices and disciplined approach to resolving mission-critical problems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong working knowledge of Unity / C# and Unreal Engine / C++.
  • Prior experience working with industry-standard tools, gaming technologies, and first-party and third-party services; such as Satori / Nakama / Hiro, Xbox Live, PlayFab, Figma, Havok, Audio Tools, Xcode, Visual Studio, GitHub and Perforce, JIRA.

The annual base salary range for this position is between $136,000 and $170,000.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
