The Storage Migration Engineer handles NAS data migrations from NetApp and Isilon, ensuring data integrity, security, and compliance while collaborating with cross-functional teams.
Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Storage Migration Engineer to support the migration of NAS data from NetApp and Isilon environments. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in CIFS & NFS protocols, data re-platforming, and file security management. This role is remote, but candidates located in California are preferred.
The team may consist of either two Level 2 engineers or a combination of a Level 2 and Level 1 engineer based on skill alignment.
Key Responsibilities:

NAS Data Migrations:
- Plan, execute, and validate data migrations from NetApp and Isilon storage systems.
- Ensure minimal downtime and data integrity throughout the migration process.

Re-platforming:
- Analyze current environments and assist in re-platforming data between NetApp and Pure Storage systems.
- Identify and address potential issues related to storage architecture differences.

Protocol & File System Expertise:
- Manage and optimize CIFS (SMB) and NFS configurations.
- Troubleshoot protocol-related issues to ensure seamless data access.

File Security & Permissions:
- Assess and migrate file security settings, ACLs, and permission structures to ensure compliance and security post-migration.
- Validate file integrity and access control post-migration.

Documentation & Reporting:
- Create detailed migration plans, including pre-migration checklists, post-migration validation steps, and rollback procedures.
- Document technical procedures, lessons learned, and best practices for future reference.

Collaboration:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including network engineers, application owners, and project managers, to align on migration timelines and dependencies.
- Provide technical support during and after migrations to resolve issues quickly.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with NAS data migrations, particularly with NetApp and Isilon systems.
- Strong knowledge of NetApp CIFS & NFS protocols.
- Understanding of differences between NetApp and Pure Storage architectures.
- Experience with file security, ACL management, and permission auditing.
- Solid understanding of storage networking concepts, including data replication, snapshot management, and failover strategies.
- Proficiency in scripting (PowerShell, Bash, or Python) for automation is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
Bonus Skills:
- Experience with SAN migrations.
- Knowledge of Cirrus Data migration tools.
- Familiarity with cloud storage environments (Azure, AWS, etc.).
Preferred Certifications:
- NetApp Certified Data Administrator (NCDA)
- Pure Storage Certified Architect (PSCA)
- Microsoft Certified: Windows Server, Azure Administrator
- CompTIA Storage+ or equivalent
