Design and develop structural systems for nuclear reactors, conducting analyses and ensuring safety compliance while collaborating across teams.
The summary above was generated by AI

Radiant is an El-Segundo, CA-based clean energy startup building a nuclear microreactor. A climate-friendly alternative to diesel generators, Radiant's Kaleidos 1MW microreactor will be the world's first portable, zero-emissions power source that works anywhere. We plan to test our development reactor by 2026 and if successful, it will be the first new commercial reactor design to achieve a fueled test in over 50 years. Radiant's goal is to bring one of the world's first factory-constructed microreactors to market. Our microreactor can bring power to remote parts of the world and provide backup power for life-saving applications in hospitals or disaster-relief scenarios.

Senior Structural Civil Engineer

Radiant is looking for a Senior Structural Civil Engineer to design and develop reliable metallic and cement structures for reactor systems, including shielding and foundation structures. You will design safety critical systems that withstand natural loads (seismic, flood, wind) as well as soil interactions. You will collaborate across multiple engineering and operations teams to ensure the operation of a safe, performant reactor that meets regulatory compliance. You will be responsible for the following: trade studies, material selection, detailed structural analysis, assembly, integration, and testing. You will own an instrumental subsystem and make an impact on bringing Earth’s first mass-produced nuclear reactor to market.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Own the design, analysis, integration and testing of safety critical reactor structures including shielding systems, foundational structures, and container systems.
  • Conduct trade studies and develop designs to meet programs requirements for structural loads, natural phenomena (i.e. earthquakes), and foundation builds.
  • Develop and execute manufacturing/assembly instructions and test plans:
    • Create and manage a Bill-Of-Materials (BOM).
    • Find and develop suppliers for all components
    • Own subassembly design, manufacturing, and test schedules.
  • Own risk analysis (FMEA) for subsystems.
  • Collect requirements, provide expertise and feedback to engineers in other functional areas via clear, constructive communication.

  • Experience civil structural engineering.
  • Familiarity with relevant civil/structural codes such as ASCE/SEI 7, ACI-349, ACI-318, AISC-N690, or AISC-360

Desired Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience with design of multi-component assemblies in CAD (NX or similar).
  • Experience resolving thermal expansion issues in designs.
  • Experienced in design for manufacturability and ramping up hardware build in a production environment.
  • Experience designing cement-based structures.
  • Solid understanding and application of GD&T.
  • Proficiency with both “hand calc” analytical methods and higher fidelity finite element-based analysis methods.
  • Takes extreme ownership of work and a high degree of responsibility.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
