WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH

As the Principal of Government and Public Affairs for Nike North America - Los Angeles/CA, you’ll be a critical member of the Nike Government & Public Affairs team focused on supporting the business and enabling the brand in the Los Angeles region.

You will partner with the different corporate and functional teams within Nike North America and throughout the Nike matrix to help deliver on Nike’s policy and political agenda. You’ll leverage and mobilize Nike resources to promote, protect, and defend Nike’s policy interests and business needs.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

This role is a perfect fit for those with a background in government and public affairs, including strategic engagement with governments and external stakeholders, strong communication skills, and the ability to manage a multitude of issues and projects in a fast-paced environment. The position is located in Nike’s Los Angeles, California office.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, experience or training
  • 8+ years of local multi-jurisdictional and state-level government affairs experience spanning the private and public sectors.
  • Experience in policy and political advocacy on behalf of a business/business interests.
  • Existing government-related and business-related stakeholder relationships across the Los Angeles region.
  • Demonstrated track record of building legislative and policy agendas and leveraging relationships to deliver identified policy outcomes.
  • Capacity to think strategically and relentlessly prioritize to focus on the legislative and regulatory items that will have the largest impact to Nike’s business.
  • Experience with priority policy issue areas preferred (e.g., tax, digital, retail, trade, sustainability/product safety/chemistry).
  • Ability to represent the company publicly in a variety of professional settings.
  • Knowledge and experience complying with ethics, lobbying and campaign finance reporting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and influencing skills.
  • Participation in and passion for sports preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree or combination of relevant education, experience, and training.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish beneficial.

WHAT YOU’LL WORK ON

This role will leverage and mobilize Nike resources, assets, innovation and team expertise to power, protect, and defend Nike’s policy interests and needs, working to stay ahead of the curve in policy and politics, to align with the enterprise and act with agility. It requires a standout teammate who can think strategically, fiercely prioritize and demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to respond to unanticipated challenges with a positive mindset.

  • The role, in partnership with NA GPA teammates, will lead and implement Los Angeles region city and county legislative/regulatory policy and political engagements, aligned with enterprise strategies, operations and investments. The role will help facilitate and partner on state and federal level GPA engagements in California.
  • The individual will serve as the primary Nike NA GPA representative with internal Los Angeles-based stakeholders and government decision makers, with a focus on mayors, city councilors, county officials, the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, public safety and law enforcement, and staff/government representatives.
  • Support and leverage with government stakeholders Nike brand and Social & Community Impact investments in initiatives related to major Los Angeles regional sports teams and events.
  • Manage and lead Nike’s interests on to-be-identified industry association and chamber boards, committees, working groups and coalitions that cover priority policy and political issues.
  • Manage and direct external consultants and contract lobbyists who represent Nike in the Los Angeles region and engage on Nike’s behalf with government stakeholders.
  • Manage compliance, in coordination with external ethics counsel, with required local lobbying registrations and reporting in appropriate jurisdictions.
  • Job duties and issues may shift to include other states or jurisdictions in response to matters that may arise, dynamic business demands and external government leadership changes.
