We’re looking for a Senior 3D Character Outsourcing Supervisor who can supercharge and scale our art production. In this role, you will be responsible for working with our external artistic partners in creating 3D assets primarily for cosmetics and occasionally to support gameplay. Helping to take assets from conceptualization to final model completion.

You will work closely with Production and Art to ramp up outsourcing sustainably, handle and continuously streamline our art outsourcing pipeline and practices, manage the creation of game content day to day, and ensure that our partners have what they need to be engaged, excited and consistently deliver game-ready assets that players love.

In this role you will:

  • Collaborate with art teams (both external and internal) to guide the creation of 3D assets.
  • Provide clear, timely feedback and apply final polish to ensure the assets meet high-quality standards
  • Manage 3D pipelines and workflows, including preparing assets and documentation for external teams.
  • Implement outsourced assets and distribute them effectively to the appropriate internal teams
  • Partner with outsource studios to establish a scalable and sustainable pipeline, enabling external artists to efficiently support ongoing art and cosmetic development efforts
  • Proactively work with discipline leads in order to ensure all parts of our pipelines are working effectively
  • Maintain milestone goals, destroy roadblocks, and problem solve development issues
  • Communicate status, risks, and changes to the leads and teamHost meetings, take detailed notes and create actionable tasks

Ideally you have:

  • 3+ years of experience in professional game development environment as a 3D artist
  • 3+ years of experience working with external development teams and a thorough understanding of the challenges
  • Thorough understanding of the game development process and pipelines
  • Shipped at least 1 recent title
  • Strong project management skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience tracking complex features and reporting crucial information in a succinct manner

Bonus points for:

  • Experience working on a character-based game that has an extensive cosmetics catalog
  • Airtable experience and/or spreadsheet scripting experience
  • Familiarity with Unreal

We are a small team with big ambitions. We are hungry and want to win. We want to stay small, move fast, and ship early (while we’re still embarrassed). Whenever possible we opt to buy vs. build and we view game development as our craft - not our specialized sub-disciplines. We’re looking for people who thrive with a lot of freedom and responsibility; who wear a lot of different hats comfortably; and who are always, always acting on behalf of the player.

A key aspect of our compensation philosophy is that value creation should be aligned with rewards. Right now this means that equity is a significant portion of every full-time employee’s compensation and in the future we will look at tools like performance based bonuses and profit sharing. What will always be true is that if we win, we win together. Theorycraft offers competitive base salaries and generous equity packages for full-time employees. As a pre-revenue startup, our base salary range for all roles, including this one, is $80k-$225k. Final base salary will be determined by an array of factors including internal equity, job related knowledge, skills, and work experience. In addition to a competitive base salary and equity, employees at Theorycraft will receive all of our other great benefits and perks, including unlimited, open PTO, health, vision, dental insurance for you and your family, and an annual game budget.

We believe that people on our team should live their best lives while doing their best work (and that these should complement each other!). Therefore we’ve committed to distributed work (within 3 timezones of PST), with regular, in-person meetups to stay connected as a team. We support families and all of the unpredictability children can bring (especially when working from home). We offer unlimited, open PTO, competitive base salary, health, vision, dental insurance for you and your family, an annual game budget, and, of course, equity as a way to ensure that we all succeed together.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
