Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century’s most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril’s family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.

Anduril's Manufacturing team is offering an internship specializing in Operations Research with an emphasis on manufacturing discrete event simulation. The intern will support the development and optimization of simulation models for our dynamic defense hardware manufacturing processes, including equipment, sensors, ground/air/maritime vehicles as a digital playbook to support rapid demand.
As an Operations Research Engineer Intern you will provide technical assistance in the areas of, manufacturing processes, factory design, material flow, and facility planning. The use of DES software is critical for building dynamic simulation models to forecast production capabilities amongst various constraints (spatial requirements, material availability, labor constraints, etc) to capture all decision logic to output a performance benchmark.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
This position studies the plant layouts, gathers all the pertinent data required to build a model that will accurately identify bottleneck areas, and guides the launch & manufacturing teams to the right areas for throughput improvements.

  • Capture the current process including all physical constraints, business rules and detailed decision logic into a 3D simulation-based Digital Twin to serve as process and operational knowledge base.
  • Create feasible results, plans and schedules for shopfloor, warehouse, factory & supply chain execution in all the relevant time ranges by ensuring that all scheduled operations are resource capacity, material, and timeline feasible.
  • Maintain an adaptive, data generated and driven Digital Twin to always retain a “current status” digital reference model for determining future performance of the factory/supply chain whenever required for different transformation projects and investment decisions.

The candidate must have a thorough understanding of manufacturing and operations processes in all categories: Low volume/high mix, high volume/ low mix. Additionally, the candidate must possess experiences in working with discrete event simulation, AutoCAD layouts, probability & statistics, data filtering, and developing results visualization.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s program for Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering.
  • Must be a rising senior at the time of their internship and returning to school at the end of their internship to continue their academic studies for at least one quarter/semester.
  • Motivated to plan aggressively, accept challenges, take responsibility for assignments, and deliver objectives on time.
  • Strong leadership skills - especially in areas of teamwork, drive for results, and business acumen.
  • Prior manufacturing experience
  • Experience in building models using discrete event simulation
  • Experience with Technomatix “Plant Sim” simulation software or equivalent DES (Arena, FlexSim, Simio, etc,)
  • Basic knowledge in object-oriented computer programming (example languages: SQL, Python, R, C++, Java, etc.)
  • Proficient in handling large data sets, including filtering, identifying trends, and graphical representation.
  • Reading and understanding assembly technical drawings and conveyor system layouts
  • Knowledge of the inputs required to build an accurate simulation model.
  • Solid understanding of Lean Manufacturing/JIT principles, both in theory and practical application.
  • U.S. Person status is required as this position needs to access export controlled data

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Active Student with BS degree in a technical/ engineering related discipline, or equivalent working experience with manufacturing engineering disciplines and software solutions
  • Candidate should have knowledge of design engineering and manufacturing engineering processes including:
    • 3D CAD design/modeling of parts and assemblies
    • 3D factory layout
    • Manufacturing process planning of fabricated parts, and complex discrete assembly process.
    • Manufacturing simulation of assembly processes, human ergonomics, and discrete event simulation
    • Strong manufacturing data analytics and statistical analysis background with proficiency in statistical process control

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
