Description
The Mechanical Engineer designs and builds tangible and functional products in an R & D environment. This is a hands-on role for the mechanical designer with a passion for making things. Being on site in our Burbank facility is required so that you can both work on equipment and become a member of a diverse and collaborative team of highly skilled engineers from many disciplines.
Position Responsibilities
- Work with a dedicated team of R & D engineers to develop novel robotic systems for a wide variety of projects and industry applications including our current project, designing mechanical sub-systems for a robotic horticulture facility.
- This role will primarily consist of designing in CAD, then building & iterating mechanical prototypes using our fleet of fabrication machines.
- Partner with electrical and software teams to integrate robotic systems
Skills/Qualifications
- BS degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 8+ years’ experience as a Mechanical Designer preferably in an R & D environment
- Experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment a plus.
- Critical thinking: demonstrated creativity, the ability to challenge assumptions and make data driven decisions and recommendations
- Hands on building – ability to model a concept, fabricate, assemble, test and iterate.
- Exceptional judgement regarding the application of detail design vs rapid prototyping approach to your work with the ability to do both well.
- Advanced fabrication skills: proven ability to transfer designs to CNC programming and to use a variety of tools in well-equipped machine shop to fabricate and test prototypes. This includes CAM & CNC, manual mill & lathe, injection molding, welding, EDM, stamping, FDM & SLA printing
- Flexibility: must thrive in a fast-paced creative environment and you can wear multiple hats, from CADing & coding at your desk to machining parts & wiring custom enclosures to building things on-site & getting your hands dirty.
- Advanced materials applications and manufacturing experience including high performance alloys, composites and engineering plastics
- Proven ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with team members from diverse disciplines
- Ability to integrate electronics, microcontrollers, motors, sensors and pneumatics a strong plus.
- Must have a passion for making and building things
