Who are we?

We are The Motley Fool, a purpose-driven financial information and services firm with nearly 30 years of experience focused on making the world smarter, happier, and richer. But what does that even mean?! It means we’re helping Fools (always with a capital “F”) demystify the world of finance, beat the stock market, and achieve personal wealth and happiness through our products and services.
The Motley Fool is firmly committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity. We are a motley group of overachievers that have built a culture of trust founded on Foolishness, fun, and a commitment to making the world smarter, happier and richer.  However you identify or whatever winding road has led you to us, please don't hesitate to apply if the description above leaves you thinking, "Hey! I could do that!"

What does this team do?

Our purpose at The Motley Fool is "To Make the World Smarter, Happier, and Richer", and on the Motley Fool Wealth Management team, we get to help pursue that goal in a very direct way by managing our clients’ nest eggs and providing personalized advice. Motley Fool Wealth Management is a Registered Investment Advisor managing over $2.2 billion in stock-focused managed accounts. We also offer index-based investing, but it represents less than 1% of client assets. Our sister companies include Motley Fool Asset Management with over $2 billion in assets in ETFs; and Motley Fool Ventures with $264 million in committed capital.

What would you do in this role?

We are looking for an experienced, mission-driven Director of Financial Planning to join our team. In this critical leadership role, you will oversee a team of financial planners and client experience Fools, ensuring we provide the highest quality personalized advice and client service. You’ll drive client success by shaping our financial planning approach, innovating processes, and ensuring alignment with MFWM’s mission and core values.

But what does this role actually do?

  • Lead and mentor the Wealth Advisor and Client Experience teams, ensuring they deliver exceptional service while meeting key conversion and retention goals
  • Establish performance goals and provide regular feedback to team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development
  • Drive the strategic direction of financial planning services, ensuring offerings are comprehensive, forward-thinking, and competitive
  • Ensure all services are delivered with exceptional quality and in alignment with MFWM’s mission and values
  • Develop and implement best practices to enhance client outcomes and overall experience while strengthening satisfaction and retention rates
  • Build strong relationships and partner on feedback with our internal teams, including client service, marketing, portfolio managers, traders, operations, and developers
  • Partner closely with compliance and legal teams to manage risks and ensure ethical standards are upheld
  • Leverage data to measure team and business performance, identify areas for improvement, and develop actionable insights that drive client outcomes and business growth
  • Stay ahead of industry trends and regulatory changes to continuously improve the planning and advice processes
  • Own and manage the financial planning and client experience team’s budget, including forecasting, expense tracking, and resource allocation to support business growth

What do you need to apply?

  • 10+ years of experience in financial planning, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
  • Deep understanding of financial planning principles, investment strategies, retirement planning, tax strategies, and estate planning
  • Proven experience managing and developing high-performing teams
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with clients and team members
  • Ability to prioritize independently and in alignment with the firm’s business goals, while also working cohesively in a team-oriented setting
  • Strategic thinker with a track record of driving innovation and process improvements
  • Adaptability with a “Top It” mentality - things change and our organization as a whole moves fast - successful Fools are charged by this energy
  • Passion for Motley Fool Wealth Management’s mission and a commitment to fiduciary excellence
  • Experience with financial planning software and CRM systems
  • Certified Financial Planner® designation required
  • Certified Public Accountant and/or Chartered Financial Analyst® designations are nice-to-haves

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
