Irvine-based video game developer Frost Giant announced Wednesday that it raised $5 million in fresh financing in a round co-led by Kona Venture Partners and Global Founders Capital.
The game developer has been busy over the past couple of months. In October of last year, Frost Giant launched out of stealth with $4.7 million in seed capital. All told, the company has brought in $9.7 million in venture capital financing to date.
Frost Giant was co-founded by video game industry veterans Tim Campbell and Tim Morten. Both men previously worked on popular games like World of Warcraft and Starcraft II.
Following the latest raise, the company is welcoming another StarCraft II veteran to its ranks. James Anhalt, former lead engineer for the aforementioned game, will join Frost Giant as the company’s chief architect.
Anhalt will oversee the developer’s engineering initiatives as it works to bring real-time strategy (RTS) games to a broader audience. RTS games involve action that takes place in real time, as opposed to turns.
“Frost Giant’s strong foundation gives us the ability and opportunity to create RTS games that appeal to more players than ever before,” Anhalt said in a statement.
Although RTS games haven’t gotten as much attention in recent years as other genres like first-person shooters or console action-adventure games, Frost Giant is hoping to turn the tide and make a splash with its future contribution.
The company is aiming to accomplish this by enhancing cooperative gameplay, expanding the legacy of competitive esports and empowering user-generated content.
Campbell and Morten told Forbes that they expect their first game to be ready to launch sometime over the next four years. But, the duo said they are much more focused on building a great game than they are hitting a particular launch date.
