Cedars-Sinai Accelerator Powered by Techstars announced its second-ever cohort this morning, and of the eight companies selected from all over the world, Los Angeles still leads the pack.

Three of the startups selected are headquartered in LA. We spoke with James D. Laur, vice president for legal and technology affairs at Cedars-Sinai, about the relationship between the hospital and the startups.

Three of the eight startups chosen are based in LA. What does that say about the healthtech community in the area?

There is a strong and growing entrepreneurial community in Los Angeles and healthtech is a significant component. It is worth noting that after partnering with Cedars-Sinai to establish the healthcare accelerator, Techstars recently started two additional accelerator programs in Los Angeles. This reflects the increased recognition of Los Angeles as a significant location for new opportunities in the tech space.

What do you expect from this cohort?

Based on the positive experience we had with the first class in the Cedars-Sinai Accelerator powered by Techstars, we are confident the incoming cohort will benefit from the mentorship that is the hallmark of the program, which will lead to continued involvement with a number of the graduates not only through follow-on investments but also through collaboration on projects together.

How has it been working with Techstars to develop the program?

We doubt that we could have found a better partner to develop the Cedars-Sinai Accelerator for the healthtech sector than Techstars. Techstars accelerator programs are clearly the gold standard in the industry.

The 8 participants include:

Cerebro Solutions

Cebebro Solutions, headquartered in LA, develops a platform that helps healthcare organizations manage clinicians and labor costs while also forecasting labor demands.
